Foster Homes

Be a Foster Home

Thank you for your interest in being a foster parent for SOFA!

What do Foster Homes do?

Foster parents provide temporary loving homes for cats, kittens, dogs and puppies that we rescue from across Southeast Alaska.  Some animals need a short-term foster, some need longer care until they find a forever home.

Fostering is generally flexible enough for most lifestyles and SOFA will work with you to match you with foster pets that will fit in to your household.  By giving your time and love to a foster animal, you help prepare them for adoption into a permanent home.  We always need foster homes, our intake of animals is limited to the foster homes we have available at any time.

What we provide

All medical care, food, and supplies.

What you provide

Love and care, a little time, and a safe home environment.  Some transportation to events or veterinary appointments may be asked, but not required.

How do I get started?

Fill out our Foster Home Application below and we’ll get in touch with you to ask more questions or let you know the next steps as soon as we have a pet in need!  You’ll be able to sign up with our Foster Portal to detail your homes foster preferences, or select blackout dates that you are unable to foster.  You can log in at any time and update your preferences.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I fall in love with my foster animal and wish to adopt them?

If you decide that you want to keep a foster animal, we let our foster homes take priority in our Adoption Screening process.  We do ask that you consider whether you will be able to continue fostering in the future if you adopt a foster animal, as we are always in need of foster homes.

My friend or family member wants to adopt my foster animal!

This is great news! They should put in an Adoption Application right away so that they can be screened to adopt the pet. Make sure they reference the pet they want to adopt in the application!
